Navigating in the winter environment
Avalanche awareness and avoidance
Weather and Hazardous conditions
Route planning, guidebook interpretation
Correct use of Crampons and Ice Axes
Movement on snow and ice
The course will be very practical with an emphasis on learn through doing. Each morning, we will assess the weather/avalanche forecasts and plan a suitable route before heading into the Cairngorms and surrounding mountains. On Day 1, you will learn essential winter skills, how to use ice axe and crampons, self-arrest practice on steep ground. On days 2-3 we will plan longer days to include several classic Scottish Munros if weather conditions allow. You will learn how to navigate in the winter environment and we’ll look at some emergency shelters for when things go wrong. Whether this is your first foray into the Winter environment or you have limited experience and would like to learn new skills, this course is ideal for you.
All course dates are Fri to Sun with accommodation and evening meals provided on Fri and Sat nights. Lunch will be provided for each day of the course, as will breakfast on Sat/Sun.
